Heaven is a Free Gift
"These things I have written unto you…that ye may know that ye have eternal life." 1 John 5:13 "The Gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord…" Romans 6:23 "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the Gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast." Ephesians 2:8,9 "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." Romans 3:23
The text for this Sunday’s anthem “City Called Heaven” describes “a pilgrim of sorrow” who is left in this world “alone” with “no hope for tomorrow”. The text continues with a sorrowful cry and yearning for heaven. For those of us who have accepted Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior and placed all of our faith in Jesus alone, we know without a shadow of a doubt that we are going to heaven to live an eternal life with Him. (See Ephesians 2:8,9) The Bible says, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved.” Acts 16:31
While doing some research for this article I came across three sermons by Dr. Kennedy relating to Heaven; “The Glories and Certainty of Heaven,” “Why I Believe in Heaven,” and “No Night There” each a pure gem. I would like to quote a small section of the beginning and end of “No Night There”. “The man had been in a coma for several days. Suddenly he opened his eyes. Feeling somewhat euphoric because of the anesthetics he had had, a broad smile crossed his face and he said: “Am I in Heaven?” “No, dear,” said his wife. “You’re here with me.”
That is not meant to be a commentary on wedded bliss, but simply a reminder that it is the deep down desire of every heart to one day be in Heaven, “where there is no night there,” in all of the glories of Paradise. Next to the incredible discovery that there is a God, the greatest discovery any person ever makes, after having been born into this world, is that there is also a Heaven—a paradise where we will live forever. Can you imagine what life would be like without that hope? We would, indeed, be without hope in the world.”
“But the Good News is that you can have an earnest of your inheritance in Heaven. You can have a foretaste of Heaven right now. We receive eternal life in this world the moment that we put our trust in Jesus Christ and invite Him to come into our life. He comes and brings the foretaste of the joy and the peace and the love that we will know in Heaven fully, right here in this world. So we can sing of the melody that He has started in our hearts right now.”
Until next time….See you in the Choir Loft!
